I just got back from a wonderful 5 days near St. Petersburg, Florida, at a boutique fitness boot camp. Hosted by Getaway Fitness and held at the Don CeSar Beach Resort, it was 4 full days of hardcore training -- 4-5 hours a day of workouts -- followed by evenings of hot stone massage and facials at the resort's luxurious Spa Oceana. I did boot camp, ran on the beach, kayaked, rock climbed, biked, ate amazing gourmet meals and made some great friends on my trip.
I'm a big fan of fitness getaways, having biked my way through Northern Portugal with CrossRoads Cycling Adventures and having spent a week hiking, exercising and detoxing at Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico. These trips are a great way to jumpstart a fitness routine, lose weight and de-stress. For many people, fitness vacations can be a life-changing experience. You learn how to eat better, how to train more efficiently and you almost always push yourself to try something you've never done before. For me, my biggest challenge on this trip to Florida was running 4.5 miles on a beach in gusting winds at high tide, which meant LOOSE sand! For the record, I run/walked it. But it felt amazing to finish.
Fitness vacations are fast-becoming a huge trend in travel. I have a good friend who's spending this week at the Green Valley Spa in Utah and (according to her Facebook posts) she's spending her days getting into incredible shape.
I encourage everyone to consider a fitness vacation for 2011. These getaways are not cheap (they seem to average about $400 a day on up), but for 5 hours of personal training, 3 gourmet meals and luxury accommodations, it seems like a great deal to me. Just make sure to book a couple spa treatments in the evenings to reward yourself for a full day of workouts.[about.com]
